    Mission Statement

Bill Arp Elementary School's counselor will provide students with a comprehensive guidance program, counseling and support services.  We will help students learn the skills necessary to become lifelong learners.

What are School Counselors?

School Counselors are a type of helper in your school. We help kids with things like problem solving, understanding feelings, and making friends! Professional school counselors are essential members of an education team.  We help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development.

What do School Counselors do?

  • talk with individual students to help them deal with various issues and help them meet specific needs and goals
  • meet with students in small groups who may share a common concern, such as divorce, grief and loss, friendship skills, anger management, etc.
  • visit classrooms to teach lessons about things that will help you in school, and out of school!  Guidance lessons are developmental in design and address topics such as test-taking skills, bullying, manners, responsibility, etc.
  • consults with teachers, parents, and administrators to help students become better learners and responsible citizens

Who are School Counselors for?

  • Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper
  • Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school
  • Allow your child to express their emotions regarding the test, talking about the test with your child can relieve stress
  • If you are anxious about your child's test it's ok, but try to keep cool around your child, you don't want them to get anxious about their tests too.
  • Encourage your child to do well, but don't pressure him/her, you may stress him/her out, it is important for your child to stay relaxed on the test.
  • Encourage your child to keep a positive attitude

  Students should:

  • Listen carefully to the directions, if unsure, ask for help
  • Read the question and all answer choices before marking anything
  • Pace yourself
    • Don't spend too much time on any one question
    • Do your best then move on
    • Answer the easiest questions first, but be sure to go back to those questions you skipped
  • Do not change your answers unless you are very certain about your first answer choice
  • Try to answer every question
  • Think about your answers and pick the best possible choice
  • If you finish early, check to make sure you have answered all the questions
  • Don't worry if others finish before you, focus on the test in front of you
  • When you are finished make sure that you have answered all the questions
